Danica Bryant Shares Gritty New Single 'ready To Bite'

Wellington’s “rowdy pop star with a guitar” Danica Bryant releases her brand-new single Ready To Bite today. With her raging vocals, sneering lyrics and fiery pop-rock style, the track critiques celebrity culture whilst demanding listeners join Bryant on the dance floor.

The track is Bryant’s first major collaboration, created during the Hawkes’ Bay installment of the prestigious APRA AMCOS Songhubs. Produced and written with iconic Kiwi producer Simon Gooding, alongside the sweeping talents of MCK and Jake Murphy, the track analyses how social media and news outlets turn people’s lives into commodities.

Following a conversation with American musician Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls, Bryant felt “disturbed by how quickly we make assumptions on others without ever really knowing their experiences”. Halloween-themed music by artists like Kim Petras, Halsey and The Last Shadow Puppets shaped the track’s darker sound. “I wanted to create something fun and upbeat on the surface, but with a purposefully strange, spooky energy just bubbling underneath… There’s nothing more monstrous than the way we consume people.”

Hailing from Hawkes’ Bay, Bryant is renowned for supporting Elton John on his 2020 New Zealand tour. She bears national titles from Play It Strange and Smokefree Rockquest, as well as a songwriting mentorship with Bic Runga, a performance history with several national festivals, and funding from NZ On Air’s artist-producer development programme. Her June release Heart Eyes debuted with RNZ to immense fanfare, following her critically acclaimed debut EP Cider last year.

Bryant’s “mature cynicism” (Ambient Light), “gritty, sultry vocals” (NZ Musician) and “infectious melodies” (muzic.net) give Ready To Bite a dangerously sharp set of teeth. There is no doubt the track will leave you hungry for more from this exhilarating young Kiwi artist.
