Ellery Daines to release new single on 18 March

Ellery Daines is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and mixing engineer from Nelson, now based in the Norwegian Arctic city of Tromsø. He makes rock music with overtones of punk, jazz and pop. His influences include The Living End, Shihad, Muse and Queens of the Stone Age. Over the last five years he wrote, recorded and mixed his debut album Failure Thirty Minutes Deep, scheduled for release later in 2022. Impostor Syndrome, the album’s second single, will be released on 18 March.
Impostor Syndrome is an explosive synth-rock song about being ignored as an artist. Is it because you haven’t been “discovered” yet, or because everyone else knows your art is terrible? Ellery wrote it after giving up on performing music in New Zealand, frustrated after playing shows to mostly tiny audiences in an indifferent or hostile environment. “The people directly involved were all great, and there are so many extremely talented local artists around. But the general public by and large either didn’t seem to care about local music, or actively made noise complaints. After so many shows like that, you start to lose perspective and wonder if maybe they know something you don’t.”
Ellery performed all instruments and vocal parts, as well as producing and mixing the song. It was recorded at Kysten Studio and his home in Tromsø. Ellery’s work has been quietly gaining traction in Tromsø, with the not-yet-released album earning him both a “Talentstipend” award from DNB and funding from “Tvibitstigen” for a regional tour later this year.
