Ōtautahi Guitar Slinger Sam Bambery Releases Debut Album 'songs About Sailors' With Vigorous Lead Track 'waiting'

Sam Bambery is excited to announce his debut album, Songs About Sailors, set for release today on all major streaming platforms. Recorded in July 2021 with local guru De Stevens, Bambery’s thoughtful and hook-heavy debut hits hard with themes digging deep into emotional canyons of heartbreak and hope.

Songs About Sailors explores Bambery’s love of alt-country, traditional folk and no-nonsense indie rock. Opening track Waiting hits hard with a melodic pop-rock sensibility, being followed by slow burner Crying. The album traces around garage rock sounds like on The Other and They Don’t Love Me Back, whilst also pulling together heartfelt ballads in Mirror Man. The 9-track album comes to a close with the stripped-back Corduroy Queen, a folk guitar duo, championing Bambery’s folk influences.

Sam Bambery is a Christchurch-based musician that has built a steady reputation in the Garden City’s alternative music and art scenes whilst also having a deep interest in folk music and creative songwriting as a whole. Working closely with De Stevens (Marlin’s Dreaming, Asta Rangu), Bambery recorded his debut album in St. Martins, a hotbed of talented local musicians including Ryan Fisherman, Thomas Isbister and Shaun Malloch.

Bambery takes great inspiration from various indie artists like Wilco and Elliot Smith, Aldous Harding and Cut Worms. His music is deeply rooted in Christchurch’s local country/folk scene, taking cues from local artists such as Marlon Williams, Adam Hattaway and Delaney Davidson. His music pushes this envelope further into his own contemporary style. His band consists of an ensemble of local musicians that enjoy approaching his folksy songs with a modern artistic sensibility.

Sam Bambery likes to keep busy and 2022 is an ambitious year for him, having already made plans to record another body of work with De Stevens and Ryan Fisherman, Bambery looks to push his craft further into a distinct alternative and contemporary sound. His continued work with local songwriter Hannah Everingham looks hopeful with their musical perspectives fusing into a unique art-folk package.
