Bringing forward a sound that’s nostalgic yet refreshing and new, Knowing You’re Mine is one for the romantics. This stunning soulful song will connect with all who have experienced – or are experiencing – being away from a loved one. Knowing You’re Mine is about being in a long-distance relationship but taking comfort in knowing they’re yours.
Like most great music, Nick and Kristin were inspired by their own experience as two working artists in a relationship.
“We’re often living apart in different cities for months at a time,” says Nick. “When Knowing You’re Mine was written, Kristin had already been away for 2 months before Auckland’s longest lockdown was announced in August 2021.” This resulted in Kristin and Nick isolating separately.
On Kristin’s flight home she spoke with her friend and colleague, Andrew Papas, about how they make their individual relationships work through the distance. “Andrew shared with me how he knew his wife was the one,” says Kristin. “He said, ‘It’s cheesy, but you only know when you know that you don’t want to be without them anymore.’ It was that quote that stuck with me when I got home and started writing Knowing You’re Mine about Nick”
The couple says the song reflects their dynamic and collaboration – a marriage of nostalgic early RnB and modern RnB/Pop, which are the two genres they share. It also highlights Kristin’s lyricism and Nick’s musicianship. The track also showcases the production skills of Mo’Dre/Andre Brown.
There is also an appropriately romantic video accompanying the single release. Based on the iconic motif scene of the 1989 classic film, When Harry Met Sally, the duo invited couples they knew to sit on a couch and tell them how they met/got together.
“Couples tend to get sweet and affectionate with each other when they reminisce on how it all started. We wanted the video to feel like a celebration of love with genuine reactions and interactions because, at its core, that’s what the song is. It’s romantic, it’s sweet, it’s genuine.”
The duo’s name – Citris iNK – is an anagram of ‘Kristin/Nick’ with NK capitalised at the end as a “cheeky nod. It’s pronounced like Citrus, just spelt differently for fun.” With an already celebrated live show, and more new music to come, make sure you’re following Citris iNK!
