Saint Lane Releases New Ep 'i Thought My Name Was Cursed' + Poignant Single 'i Think I’ve Seen This Film Before'

Gold Coast-based, Fijian Kiwi artist Saint Lane is back, today releasing his new EP I Thought My Name Was Cursed, along with the infectious and lamenting new single I Think I’ve Seen This Film Before.

The 7-track EP is packed with Lane’s signature blend of smooth melodies, textured beats, and hard-hitting personal songwriting. New collaborations open up the Saint Lane sound even further from previous works, with I Thought My Name Was Cursed featuring producers Jacob Riviera, Ike Campbell, as well as long-time collaborators Danny Duke (Baker Boy, Dallas Woods), and Chunkyluv (ONEFOUR, William Singe).

“The EP is me showing my poker cards; here is most of the things I can do,” explains Lane. “There’s pop moments, dance moments, rap moments with different narratives and themes. Everything even down to the art direction has all been curated by me over a 6 month period.”

First up on the EP and the lead single also out today, is the emotive track I Think I’ve Seen This Film Before, featuring vocals from Lily Papas. Describing the single, Lane says “It’s a sad song, about being dumped on your birthday but then continuing to see your ex. You both know it’s not the healthy thing to do, but you just keep doing it anyway. It’s a story I’ve heard time and time again.”

After releasing last year’s highly successful EP Rainbows End, Lane completely retired from music, saying “I gave my career a good 10 year attempt and though there were wins, it really just felt like an endless losing streak.” Sticking to this plan, he started managing a company that takes young adults with disabilities on holidays. It was while editing a Christmas video made on one of the trips, that Lane came across Lewis Cullen’s beat for Bootleg Jordans and was immediately inspired to write.

“I recorded the song at my longtime friend and collaborator Ike Campbell’s house, and his incredibly talented wife Lily Papa harmonised over the track,” says Lane. “I thought it was cool, but I didn’t really have any intention of putting it out on streaming, so I made an EP that was exclusive to USB and sold them online. That got a really great response, so I made a new EP for streaming which had some songs from the USB version, but is mostly compiled with brand new music.”

Saint Lane fans can celebrate the return of this phenomenal artist, because as for Lane, from here it’s only up: “I feel like I’m hitting a career peak form right now and trusting myself more than I have in the past.”

Saint Lane has established himself as a dynamic potency in the Australian and New Zealand music industry. Since his inception, Lane has collaborated with Andrew Dawson (Kanye West’s producer) and Mike Malichicoff (Kids See Ghosts’ producer), and locally featured on tracks with Bootleg Rascal, Robbie Miller, and Travy P. His previous releases have been widely embraced by the likes of triple j, The Edge, Mai fm, NIU fm, ZM, Apple Music 1 Radio, Spotify and Apple Music, with Lane also receiving online praise from The Needle Drop, NME, Billboard (USA), Pilerats, The Guardian, Sniffers (NZ), GQ, Pedestrian TV and MTV Upload.
