Deep Water Creek Releases New Single ‘Bucket Spider’

Ōtautahi-based singer/songwriter Deep Water Creek (Matthew Smith) has today released his beautiful new single Bucket Spider.

The listening experience of the fun and bubbly Paul Simon-esque single has been described by the artist as being like “floating downstream underwater”. The vocals are laid-back, the rhythm steadily drives it forward, and the lyrics are written and delivered by a natural storyteller – all the ingredients that make Deep Water Creek a great artist. Written while recording his first album, Bucket Spider is the story of a failed attempt at saving a spider trapped in a bucket full of water.

“Outside the studio was an old bucket full of water. In the bucket, a deceased-looking spider. Being deathly afraid of spiders I would check intermittently to see if it was still alive. After 2 days and much worry, I decided to free the spider. I dropped a pebble in the water and surprise! the spider was alive. I had to free it. Unfortunately, in the process the spider was dashed against the rocks I poured the water out on. And with it my dreams of being a liberator of trapped spiders. Oh well, kick the bucket.”

In celebration of this release, Bad Gin Sanctuary is presenting a single-release show at Christchurch’s Space Academy on 13 November. With a full band and support from celebrated songstresses Coyote (Amiria Grenell & Holly Arrowsmith), it’s guaranteed to be a great show.

Recorded and mixed by Josh Logan at Loho studios, Bucket Spider is the first single to be released from a new album, set to drop in early 2023. Since recording and releasing 2021’s News From The South album with Christchurch-based producer Thomas Isbister, Deep Water Creek has been hard at work in the studio recording his new, wonderfully dreamy record. Full of instantly memorable tunes this album shows a depth and maturity to the artist’s songwriting, coupled with some of his best-recorded material to date.
