deepState announces new album ‘Dreams’, releases single ‘Won’t Let You Down’
deepState is the musical project of Jessica Morgan (she/her), a musician and songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her music is a journey of electronic experimentation, investigating the nuances of House, Electronica, Downtempo, Garage and Breakbeat.
Today deepState announces her new album Dreams (released digitally on September 1 via Sunreturn), and shares a new single and video for Won’t Let You Down.
Won’t Let You Down is a high-energy heartbreak, traversing soft pads, emotionally charged vocal hooks, four to the floor kick drums and one hell of a piano loop. Blissfully melancholic, it’s like watching the sunrise after an all night rave.
“I wanted to make an uplifting dance track inspired by house and dance hits of the 1990’s” says Morgan. “I love the big sound of house, rave piano and vocal samples, they feel so euphoric and always add an extra layer of energy and emotion.”
“Won’t Let You Down is probably the most upbeat track on Dreams and I feel that it stands out from the rest in that way.”
Won’t Let You Down is accompanied with a NZ On Air funded music video made by Frances Carter, a photographer and director who has worked with the likes of BENEE, TEEKS, The Beths and Melodownz. Her work has appeared in well-known publications including Rolling Stone, i-D, Nylon and Vogue.
“I was instantly into this track when I heard it, it has such a great hook and I love how it develops from quite a spacey, calm beginning to a true floor banger,” says Carter. “Jess and I both liked the idea of a simple video focusing on a couple going out for a dance, with Jess herself only making a few small appearances. We shot over one weekend with just a two person crew, roaming around various locations from Mt Albert to Eden Terrace. We decided on black and white for the majority of the video, with the transition to neon colour serving to illustrate how immersive and transformational it can be to just let loose and have a good, sweaty dance.”
Won’t Let You Down is the first single from Dreams, deepState’s second studio album expected for release in September via Sunreturn.
