Otautahi Allstars – 20th Anniversary Digital Release

After the launch of independent Christchurch based record label, Central Records and his first solo release in 2002, a young Oakley Grenell with an ambition to release an album a year assembled a cohort of his city’s finest under the banner Otautahi Allstars.

With the help of Central Records co-founder, Hayley Dingwall, Oakley and his collective of Christchurch musicians (that independently, would go on to shape the musical landscape of Aotearoa for decades to come) came together to produce a stunning jazz infused reggae and dub album that proved to be a summer favourite – for many summers to come.

Along with Oakley on guitar, this musical constellation combined younger brother Redford Grenell on drums (Shapeshifter), Devin Abrams on alto sax (Pacific Heights / Shapeshifter), Isaac Aesili on trumpet (Sorceress / Funkommunity / Solaa), Johnny Lawrence on bass (Electric Wire Hustle / Solaa), Kurt ‘DJ Partido’ Dyer on percussion (Solaa) and the soulful vocals of Parks (Ladi6) for obvious reasons could never quite align for a second record, making this debut even more special.

The 7-track originals album + remix initially released on CD format via Central Records and 7” single limited release vinyl via Kog Transmissions is finally now available to be enjoyed on all digital platforms.
