Jupita Announces New Single ‘Want You Back’ + Auckland Release Show

Jupita is the musical project of Julia Morris (she/her), a songwriter and producer from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) who is currently based in London.
Jupita makes indie pop from the heart, with nostalgic nods to radio and music television from the early 2000’s. Her lyrics are hyper personal, examining the highs and lows of self discovery in one’s early twenties.
Today Jupita shares Want You Back, the title track from an upcoming five track EP and announces her return to Aotearoa, performing in Tāmaki Makaurau in November. Tickets are available now from Undertheradar.
Want You Back shimmers, built on a foundation of devotional guitars, chorused arpeggios and vast, resonant drums. Want You Back was produced by Levi Patel (Alayna, Gala George) with additional production by Justyn Pilbrow (Elemeno P, Chelsea Jade) and Maude Minnie Morris (Lips, Isla Noon).
Lyrically Want You Back longs for past loves, while playing with indie culture references (‘I can’t listen to Courtney Barnett because it makes me think of you’). “It might be a cliche but songwriting can be very therapeutic, and writing Want You Back was one of those times,” says Morris. “I feel like a lot of my songwriting comes from a place of really wanting to tell someone what’s going on in my head but it’s either probably better not to, or I don’t know how to, so I put those words into songs.”
“The first part of the song I wrote is the pre chorus. ‘She messaged me 140 times before 2. That’s 140 times more than you. That’s what you and I used to do.’ I was hanging out some washing at around 2pm and I got yet another text from someone that I was kind of seeing. I looked at my phone and counted up how many messages this girl had sent me that day and it was 140. All I could do in this new ‘situationship’ was compare everything to my ex. Me and my ex used to message each other all day every day as well. So the song is about realising that you are still in love with you ex because of someone else that just doesn’t compare and you want them back. No one can even come close to them.”
“The second verse talks about Courtney Barnett because she will always remind me of a specific time in my life. This new person had no idea who Courtney Barnett is and that made me sad. Needless to say it did not work out.”
Want You Back is accompanied by a music video made by Alex Rod with help from NZ On Air Music. Morris reflects on the release, expressing, “I think this is my favourite song of mine in terms of the sounds used and the production. It feels very ‘Me’.”
