Riqi Harawira Releases New Single ‘Let’s Dance’ on 24 May
Mark your calendars for Friday, May 24th at 9am because something EPIC is dropping! Get ready to groove, because Riqi Harawira is unleashing a killer cover of David Bowie’s iconic Let’s Dance that will blow your mind!
In homage to Bowie’s enduring legacy, Riqi Harawira is thrilled to unveil a cover of Let’s Dance.
“Beneath its pulsating beats lies a poignant commentary on the plight of First Nation Australians, a narrative often overlooked. Symbolised by the imagery of red shoes, Bowie’s exploration of injustice resonates deeply, This song highlights how the First Nation people of Australia have been impacted by racism and how they continue to face the consequences of racist government policies and community attitudes. It’s a powerful message that deserves to be heard, and I feel honoured to be able to share it.”
“When I first heard Let’s Dance, in 1983 it had a profound impact on me both spiritually and emotionally. The song’s message about the struggles of the first nation Australians deeply resonated with me. I started learning how to play the guitar around that time, now I am grateful to be able to perform my version of this awesome song today, and it brings me much joy.”
“My approach to life has been shaped by both Indigenous and Western cultures. I choose to embrace both cultures and combine their values and practices to become a more compassionate, racially tolerant, and understanding person. I believe that by blending Western ideals and tools with Indigenous hearts and values, we can create a more harmonious society where all races can collaborate and break down walls between us. It’s not just about birthright but a conscious decision to respect and learn from both cultures.”
